With the ever increasing integrity concerns in the society ranging from corruption and unethical behavior to social inequality and lack of trust in institutions, we came together to help develop initiatives to counter this menace. According to transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index 2020, corruption remains a global challenge. Out of 180 countries assessed, two -thirds scored below 50 on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).  According to the same report, the average score for African countries is 32 out of 100 while Kenya scored 31 out of 100, indicating a significant corruption challenge.  According to the Democracy Index 2020 by the Economist Intelligence Unit, only 8.4% of the world’s population lives in a “full democracies”, while 35.6% live in “flawed democracies”, and 35.% live in “hybrid regimes” or “authoritarian regimes”. There is variations in democratic governance across the African continent with some countries scoring higher than others, this is according to the Ibrahim Index of African Governance 2020 ranks on their performances in key governance indicators. In Kenya, the Democracy Index 2020 ranks Kenya as a “flawed democracy” with a score of 5.52 out of 10.

Corruption is a significant problem in many communities, with officials and institutions engaging in unethical behavior for personal gain. When individuals lack trust in public institutions, it can lead to reduced civic engagement, apathy, and lack of accountability. Social inequality is pervasive problem in many communities, with marginalized groups experiencing discrimination and disadvantage. Environmental degradation is a pressing concern that affects communities worldwide, with human activity leading to pollution, deforestation, and climate change. Young people may feel disengaged from communities, leading to a lack of civic participation and a sense of alienation.

All of us agree on a shared solution of utilizing citizen-led integrity building approach to help fill in the gaps and amicably solve the problems. We believe Integrity building initiatives help promote transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior in public institutions and reduce opportunities for corruption. It helps rebuild trust in institutions by promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior. Furthermore, Integrity building initiatives helps to promote fairness, justice, and equal opportunity, reducing the gap between the rich and the poor. Additionally, it promotes  sustainable practices and responsible behavior, reducing the impact of human activity on the environment. Integrity building initiatives engage youth in community activities, promote positive values, and encourage ethical behavior, helping to build stronger, more connected communities.

We are now running several programs and projects that promote community integrity building. These include Education and awareness-raising campaigns (workshops, training sessions, and information campaigns on topics such as corruption, transparency, and accountability), Community engagement initiatives to promote civic participation and build trust in public institutions (town hall meetings, community forums, and other events that bring together community members and public officials to discuss issues of concern), Integrity awards and recognition programs to honor individuals and organizations that demonstrate exemplary ethical behavior (awards for public officials who demonstrate transparency and accountability, or businesses that operate in an ethical and socially responsible manner) Monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress in promoting community integrity building (setting up mechanisms to monitor corruption and unethical behavior in public institutions, or conducting surveys to measure public trust and confidence in these institutions), Supporting civil society organizations that promote community integrity building (providing funding, technical assistance, and other forms of support to organizations that work to promote transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior in the community) and Building partnerships and networks with other organizations and stakeholders to promote community integrity building (establishing partnerships with civil society organizations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to promote research, advocacy, and policy development).

All the above help build stronger, more resilient communities that are better equipped to tackle the challenges of the future.

Citizen-led
Integrity
Building
Approach

Citizen-led integrity building is a crucial aspect of developing strong, resilient, and thriving communities. Through this approach, we strive to create a culture of honesty, transparency, and accountability within the community, which in turn fosters trust, cooperation, and mutual respect among members.

One of the key components of citizen-led integrity building is promoting ethical behavior. We encourage community members to act in ways that are consistent with accepted standards of conduct. We develop empowerment initiatives that aid in holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that ethical violations are addressed promptly and appropriately.

Furthermore, we work on promoting transparency. We work to ensure that information is readily available to all members of the community, and that decision-making processes are open and inclusive. This helps to build trust among community members, as they are able to see that decisions are being made in a fair and equitable manner.

Additionally, we promote accountability by ensuring that individuals and organizations are held responsible for their actions. We create mechanisms for reporting and addressing wrongdoing, such as whistleblowing hotlines or grievance procedures. By holding individuals and organizations accountable, the community is able to maintain its integrity and prevent corruption and other forms of unethical behavior.

Lastly, we endeavor to promoting civic engagement. We run initiatives that encourage community members to take an active role in shaping the future of their community. This can include participating in local government, volunteering for community organizations, or simply being informed and engaged citizens. By promoting civic engagement, the community is able to harness the collective talents and resources of its members, and work together to create a better future for everyone

We strongly believe that developing strong, resilient, just, and thriving communities requires this kind of approach. By promoting ethical behavior, transparency, accountability, and civic engagement, communities can build a culture of trust and respect that fosters cooperation and collaboration. This, in turn, can help to create a more vibrant and prosperous community for everyone. Let’s do this together!
